Types of Burn Injuries

The American Burn Association reported that there were 486,000 Injuries in 2011 related to burns that required the victim to get medical care. They also reported that in 2013, there were 334 kids who died as a result of their burns. These accidents happened in homes. That same year, there were 126,035 kids who were admitted into the emergency room for burn-related injuries.

Here are the four main types of burns we see in victims:

• Thermal burns, which are caused by touching things like fire, steam, boiling liquid, or another source that is very hot
• Light burns, which can be from sunburn or from UV lights
• Chemical burns, which happen when the victim touches acid or alkali or is present at a chemical explosion
• Radiation burns, which are specific to being exposed to nuclear radiation

Burns are broken down into categories based on the severity of the burn:

• First degree burns really only affect the surface layer of the skin. When you have a first degree burn, it might be from brushing your hand against a hot pot on the stove. You might notice redness and maybe some minor inflammation. You can typically feel better with some aloe and by running your hand under cool water.
• Second degree burns are more serious. The burn is deeper into the layers of the skin. You may have a second degree burn if you accidentally put your hand on the rim of a fire pit where it’s been burning hot all night. You will likely see more extreme redness, your skin may blister and the healing time may take weeks.
• Third degree burns are the worst of it. They usually happen when your skin comes into contact with a flame or flaming liquid. These types of burns can get into all of the layers of your skin and they can even wreak havoc on your organs and sometimes even bone. You will see your skin become blackened or charred. You may suffer nerve damage permanently, have hypothermia, and some victims die from these burns. You would need immediate medical attention.
